The winners of the 2012 Racheff-Intel Awards are Li Tang (Cheng group), Karthik Jambunathan (Martin group), Brett Beiermann (Sottos group), and May Martin (Robertson group). They will present their research at the department seminar on April 26. Karthik will recieve $1,000 to sponsor a trip to a meeting of his choice.

A paper by Anoop Damodaran and Lane W. Martin at UIUC , along with colleagues from Prof. Ying-Hao Chu’s group from National Chiao Tung University is featured on the cover of Advanced Materials.

The cover shows the rugged landscape of a highly-strained BiFeO3 thin film which exhibits high-performance electro-mechanical responses. The cover image shows a high-resolution atomic force microscopy image of the complex surface structure of this material. The presence of several structural variants in these films gives rise to exotic electric-field-induced responses and electromechanical responses as large as 5%.
